Shaun White (USA) won his third US Open slopestyle competition and Kjersti Buaas (NOR) took her first US Open title at today’s 2008 US Open slopestyle competition under bright bluebird skies at Stratton Mountain Resort, Vermont. Jamie Anderson (USA)...

“I feel great,” said Shaun White. “I wasn’t planning on competing, but I thought I would take a run this morning to see how I felt. I really liked the landings, we lucked out with the weather and I ended up taking it. I’m stoked.”

Kjersti was also pleasantly surprised by her win. “I’m surprised. I was going to pull out of the competition, but ended up going for it. I tried to stay mellow and mixed it up going for big jumps and small jumps. I feel like I hit my head…that’s how confused I am. I never thought I could win…it’s very cool!”

After today’s competition, Jenny Jones and Kazuhiro Kokubo continue to lead the Burton Global Open Series, but things could change drastically after tomorrow’s US Open halfpipe competition when this year’s champions will be awarded $100,000 each – currently the largest single payout in snowboarding. Kevin Pearce maintained his grip on the Swatch TTR Tour lead. Jamie Anderson moved up to TTR No. 1 with Jenny Jones right behind her in World No. 2. Peetu Piiroinen (FIN) overtook Risto Mattila (FIN) for World No. 2, which will make for an intense showdown for the Men’s Swatch TTR World Tour Champion, who will be crowned tomorrow after the US Open halfpipe finals.

Eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) is once again World No. 1 after beating Reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) at his home break of Snapper Rocks.

Slater has hinted that he will compete on the 2008 ASP World Tour selectively and has gone so far as to say he won’t surf the next event in Bells Beach.

He made similar statements in early 2006, but after winning the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper, decided to go to Bells anyway. Slater’s wins didn’t come easily today. He had to beat 3X ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) in the Quarters and 2007 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Flores (FRA) in the Semis prior to his heat with Fanning today. It’s good to win a contest, but to beat the top guys to get there is even better.” Kelly Slater said.

Jérémy Florès produced an impressive display to make it as far as the semi-finals. Up against Kelly Slater, the Frenchmen led for much of the contest, but was eventually edged out by the American (15.17 vs 15.47 points). "3rd place is a good result going into the next event, and losing to Kelly is hardly a disgrace! I'm happy with the way I've started the season." said Jérémy after his series. Named "Rookie of the Year" and ranked 8th in the world in 2007, the Frenchman has shown he is already one of the planet's top surfers and has big hopes for his second year on the elite tour.

Miky Picon (FRA), who bested Andy Irons (HAW) in Round 1 before losing to highscorer of the event Taj Burrow in Round 3, got an equal 17th place finish. 2008 ASP World Tour rookie Aritz Aranburu (EUK) had to pull out of the event after Round 1, due to a broken meniscus and over-extended knee ligaments that will keep him out of water for 6 weeks

Nissan is proud to announce the second urban mountain bike freeriding series taking place in five European cities. With the $250,000 prize purse available, Nissan shows their continued support of the mountain biking scene & its competitors.

Last year’s series marked a landmark in freeride mountain biking events. Ten’s of thousands of spectators, the worlds international press & broadcasters followed the tour to show their huge support for the riders & the Nissan Qashqai Challenge whilst the riders excelled to new heights in a bid to prove themselves the most “Urbanproof”.
The Nissan Qashqai Challenge 2008 will consist of five contests in Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the UK.

With the help & feedback of the NQC riders committee Nissan have made several changes to the 2008 format including the addition of Open events. By splitting the series into 2 Opens & 3 Challenge events, Nissan have opened up the contest to a wider range of riders whilst also allowing the top 15 riders from the 07 series the opportunity to focus on peaking for the final three Challenges & grand final. During the first two stops in Milan (Italy) and Madrid (Spain), ten riders will be given the opportunity to qualify for the final three Challenge events in Munich (Germany), Paris (France) and London (United Kingdom). In addition to those 10 riders, the top 15 of the last year’s Qashqai overall ranking will join them in the final three Challenge events. In total there will be 25 of the world’s best mountain bikers showing off their unbelievable skills in order to become the freeride champion of the year.

Quote: Darren Berecloth, 07 winner of the NQC overall series: ”Nissan’s support of the mountain biking scene is fantastic! Last year the Qashqai Challenge provided myself & the other tour riders with some of the most insane course’s to ride & add to that the incredible prize fund that was on offer, well that just proves that the QC is serious MTB’ing fixture”.

Quote: Jean-Pierre Diernaz, GM Marketing Communications, Nissan Europe: “Nissan are committed to taking the exhilarating sport of MTB freeriding to the next level and driving its international recognition. With our focus for 2008 on discovering and inspiring new talent, Nissan are looking forward to an even more exciting second series.”
Course builders from all over the world will work together to provide an individual touch to each of the events. Be anxious to see nice shaped tracks out of dirt and wood. The courses will set a new standard in the sport. Tour Director Tarek Rasouli mentions:” In 2008 we will step it up again. We will use more dirt for the courses at the five events, so the riders enjoy the courses even more and are better protected when they crash. Since we included the Open events, we can guarantee that the world’s best riders will participate in the tour. Riders from all over the world can apply to participate in the Qashqai Open events!”

The whole Nissan Qashqai Challenge will take place in late April and during the whole of May. Five back-to-back weekends will provide Europe with first class mountain bike action in the heart of its most beautiful countries & cities.

Event dates 2008:

Saturday April 25th/26th Nissan Qashqai Challenge Open: Milan, Italy

The O’Neill Slogan “Rider developed, rider proven” was the inspiration for O’Neill's teammember Sam Lamiroy to create his Boardshort “ONME” for this year's Spring / Summer collection. And now...listen to the Master himself:

“As with most interesting things the ONME short was born out of frustration. I was simply looking for a short that I could wear in all manner of situations. O'Neill makes some of the most sophisticated and technical boardshorts on the market, however.... I still felt uncomfortable going into supermarkets, bars, the golf club, offices, hotels etc in them. I just felt underdressed – scruffy when i went anywhere outside of the surfing environment. If I found myself wanting to go for impromptu surf or swim while wearing standard smart walk shorts the result was always a rather heavy, wet, uncomfortable one!

I wanted to find the ultimate short that was smart, elegant, practical but also ready to be put to the test in the waves. I came up with the concept and the specifications and then sat down with the great designers at O'Neill and we worked out how to make some good ideas into an actually viable product.

There are some key features that I love... some obvious, some much more subtle. The material is a quick dry, stretchy cloth that looks like traditional woollen weave but feels and behaves like a super light board short, in fact when you wear this short on land it's surprising how light and comfortable it feels... an added bonus that took me by surprise.

- There are 3 fully functional pockets, essential for land use, imagine going into a bar with no pockets for your wallet. But pockets in the water are like anchors... they fill up with water and slow you down.... we have used technical zippers and ingenious tailoring and a mesh weave so the pockets look like suit trouser pockets with invisible zips that drain instantly... why has no one done this earlier??

- The key to making the shorts work was to keep a traditional look…buttons, belt loops, silk lining... we managed to keep all these key features but adapted them to a surf-functional trunk... the loops were ergonomically placed and tailored to minimize drag and board contact, the button is actually made of rubber (inspired by rugby shirts) so it works perfectly, looks 'normal' and still manages to be comfortable on the board. The lining is just classic- light blue or shocking pink.

When you wear these bad boys you will understand why I called them the ONME short... surfing, running, skating, golfing, drinking, in the office or on the beach you will say „These feel right, they fit my life they feel like they were made.... on....me"

The choice for the next years equipment shall get a lot an easier with that.

But the Test im Park is not only an event for strict sportsmen, a snowbar and live DJ-performance in the Stubneralm, right next to the Snowpark Gastein, will make for the suiting social components.

Everyone that knows Salzburg’s number one skiing resort, the Gastein Valley, is aware of the fact that the days don’t end there after being on the mountain.
Swatch O’Neill Big Mountain Pro

Day one of The Swatch O’Neill Big Mountain Pro kicked off with a scenic run down the Vallée Blanche, as the best freeride skiers and snowboarders gathered in the mountaineering resort of Chamonix.

Day one of The Swatch O’Neill Big Mountain Pro kicked off with a scenic run down the Vallée Blanche, as the best freeride skiers and snowboarders gathered in the mountaineering resort of Chamonix.

The Big Mountain Pro Day One

The snow might not have fallen here in over three weeks, but flawless blue skies revealing all the spectacle of the Vallée Blanche meant, as American skier, Cody Townsend put it: “this was the best sightseeing run I’ve ever been on. My neck hurt from looking around so much.”

The American from Santa Cruz – the historic surf town and birthplace of O’Neill – is ecstatic to be back for his second year on The Swatch O’Neill Big Mountain Pro. “I came second last year. Hopefully I can do better this year,” he said.

Cody was in some illustrious company up on the Aiguille du Midi. Last year’s snowboarding winner and overall winner of The Big Mountain Pro, Xavier de le Rue was back to have some fun in the mountains. And Jeremy Jones, just recently voted Big Mountain Rider of the year once again, was also back for this second year, simply happy to be amongst friends snowboarding in Europe “It’s cool once a year to meet up with all the guys and spend a week riding in the best conditions in the Alps in this dynamic contest,” he said. “The competition is almost secondary here. It’s about getting everyone together and riding the best mountains in the best conditions.”

The day ended in perfect style – with the guys flying off a kicker through the tress just above the Hotel Montenvers at the bottom of the Vallée Blanche as everyone involved in the event congregated for dinner after the breathtaking run.

An unexpected bonus – considering the lack of recent snowfall and almost tropical temperatures in the Alps – was the announcement that the contest would start on Monday just down the road, on the face of Le Buet.

With that, it was a train ride down the mountain and back to the Gîte la Montagne as the guys looked forward to a 6am start 3,000 meters high in the French Alps, just on the border of Switzerland.

The Big Mountain Pro Day Two

The second day of the Big Mountain Pro and it was already game on. With the weather threatening to close in during the afternoon, the riders started early with a 7am heli ride up to the vantage point next to the 3,000m face of Le Buet.

For some there was excitement, whilst for others slight trepidation as they headed off to what event organizer, Nicolas Hale-Woods, described as “One of the more challenging faces visited by The Big Mountain Pro.”

According to Nicolas, it’s a mix of the height of the face at 3,000m, the steepness, which is on average 45%, and the length of the face which is 500m top to bottom,” which presents a challenge to the riders.

After a short moment viewing the face and possible lines, the 23 skiers and snowboarders started the 75 minute hike up the ridge to the starting point at the top of the face.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the face, spectators witnessing the freeriding display were astounded by what they were seeing.

The weather held off, and the guys put on a show of fluid beautiful riding. The standout runs of the day came from Jeremy Jones, Xavier de le Rue, Flo Orley on their snowboards, and Seb Michaud and Cody Townsend on skis.

Jeremy was stoked with the way the day turned out. Back in the gite, looking back on the run, Jeremy said:

“Today was really cool. We started the day with an amazing hike and ended by riding out and climbing through a river out of the valley. It was like a fun adventure with friends.

The hike up was beautiful. I took my time and walked up with Xavier de le Rue and some others. It was just like having a day in the mountains with my friends

“The face was possibly the best face that I have ridden in a contest. It’s something I would have done for fun with my friends. I was really psyched. Sometimes I go up and look down a face and there is nothing. But with this there were a couple of lines I really wanted to do. I was stoked on a bunch. I took a straightforward clean line that only one other person had been over. It was clean snow, fun and ripable.”

With snow forecast over the next few days, it’s time to pack up and get moving and see where the weather and the mountains will lead The Big Mountain Pro to next.
